During the transformative months of lockdown, the artist found solace with a family living in
the lush enchantment of the Garden Route Forest. What was meant to be a short break from the world quickly turned into an inseparable bond. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into
three months.
Overwhelmed with gratitude for the kindness shown to her, the artist longed for a way to
express her appreciation to this family. In the beautiful songs of nature, one special sound
stood out to her – the call of the Knysna Loerie.
Inspired by this bird, the artist chose to immortalize its beauty through art and breathed life into her very first bird painting. Fuelled by the love for her creation, she embarked on a mission to infuse her artistic touch into a larger, more vast forest masterpiece.
The Knysna Loerie, also known as the Knysna Turaco, is a beautiful bird found in South Africa. It is known for its vibrant and striking colours. With its emerald, green body and red wings it is hard to miss. It has a tall green crest, which is tipped with white. In flight, Knysna turaco shows beautiful bright red flight feathers. This bird is mainly found in the lush forests of the Garden Route, specifically in the coastal region of the Western Cape. Knysna turacos are active during the day and usually seen flying between forest trees or hopping along branches. They are social and move in pairs or small family groups. The Knysna Loerie has a diverse diet, consisting of fruits, flowers, leaves, and even small insects. When it comes to mating, these birds are monogamous, meaning they mate with only one partner for life.
The Knysna Loerie is truly a remarkable bird, bringing a touch of enchantment and beauty to the forests of South Africa
